Israeli, Korean and Canadian firms Move or Expand Operations in Fairfax County
New jobs in January total 1,023
Fairfax County, Virginia, February 24, 2000 Eight corporations including an Israeli telecommunications firm that will move its North American headquarters from Florida, a Korean software manufacturer that moved from Silicon Valley, and a large Canadian telecommunications firm announced in January that they would expand in or relocate operations to Fairfax County.
The companies will add 1,023 jobs to the economy, according to the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA). Typically, every new job added spins off two to three jobs in the secondary economy.
Of the eight companies making announcements in January, five are international: two from Israel and one each from Korea, Japan and Canada. About 150 foreign companies have operations in the county. "The number of international firms moving or expanding here shows that Fairfax County is the new melting pot for the technology economy," said Gerald L. Gordon, president of the FCEDA.

ECI Telecom, an Israeli telecommunications equipment provider, is moving its North American headquarters from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Gilat Satellite Networks, another Israeli company, is adding to its U.S. headquarters operation.
Uriel Systems Inc., a Korean developer of e-commerce software, moved from Palo Alto, Calif. NEC America, the Japanese-based electronics firm, is adding to its telecommunications service operation. Teleglobe, a Canadian telecommunications company, is expanding operations at its U.S. headquarters.
