Fairfax County Firms Add 1,116 New Jobs in May and June

Capital One, five international firms among those boosting the economy

Fairfax County, Virginia, July 11, 2000 — Ten companies — including five international technology firms — announced in May and June that they would expand in or relocate operations to Fairfax County.  The companies will add 1,116 new jobs to the economy, according to the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority.

The largest announcement came from Capital One Financial Corporation, which will add 1,000 new jobs.  One of the nation's largest consumer lending firms, Capital One will consolidate its operations in a new Tysons Corner location. AboveNet Communications, which operates data centers around the world, announced it would add 40 employees to its Tysons Corner workforce.

The five international companies continue a trend of foreign-owned firms that are relocating or expanding to Fairfax County. The five: Ericsson NetQual Inc., a division of the Swedish telecommunications giant; Silanis, a Canadian developer of electronic signature software; Semantix, a Canadian developer of language translation software for businesses; intraDAT, a German developer of Linux-based e-commerce software; and Stellar Satellite Communications of Israel.

Relocations and expansions during May and June were:

For technology companies, Fairfax County offers a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, a well-educated workforce and an excellent quality of life. Typically, every new job added spins off two to three jobs in the secondary economy.

These announcements show that Fairfax County continues to appeal to large technology companies, but it also demonstrates the vitality of smaller businesses and their tremendous importance to our economic growth," said Gerald L. Gordon, president of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA).
