Fairfax County Lands Five More Israeli Companies

Nearly 2,000 new jobs added in August, FCEDA says

Fairfax County, Virginia, September 20, 2000 — Sixteen corporations — including five Israeli technology firms, an Israeli venture capital fund and two large American telecommunications companies — announced in August that they will expand in or relocate operations to Fairfax County, according to the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. The companies will add 1,959 new jobs to the economy.

Five of the six Israel-based firms — Extent Technologies, ISEG Technologies, Maximal, Redux Communications, and Yazam, the venture capital firm — are new to Fairfax County.  The sixth — Ituran Washington Corporation — is expanding it presence. With the new companies, 17 Israel-based companies have established operations in Fairfax County.

"Fairfax County is a true center for telecommunications companies and ISPs, which is why we decided to establish a home base here," said Jonathan Garini, CEO of Extent Technologies, which develops online customer care and billing software. "We wanted to keep the high level of focus on the industry that we have in Israel, and we are finding the skilled employees, business partners and high-tech atmosphere that we were looking for."

The Israeli technology industry is really hot. Companies there increasingly see Fairfax County as the best place to launch their American operations because of the proximity to many potential customers and the federal government," said Gerald Gordon, president of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. "Many of these companies have products that are appropriate to defense applications and IT."

Yazam is the second foreign-based venture capital firm to locate in Fairfax County. The FCEDA announced the other, London-based CDC India Ventures, in August.

In June Gordon and members of the FCEDA's International Division spent a week in Israel marketing Fairfax County as a U.S. business location.

The largest job increases came from Winstar, a New York-based leader in wireless communications that is expanding its operations in Herndon, and NETTel, a Washington, D.C.-based broadband services provider that has established offices in Tysons Corner.

"Fairfax County is a telecommunications capital, which is clear when you see how many telecoms are locating major operations here," Gordon said.

Some of the largest relocations and expansions during the month were:
