Fairfax County to Host First Mid-Atlantic Red Herring Venture Capital Event
15 start-ups to pitch infrastructure, wireless, security and life sciences goods and services, FCEDA says
Fairfax County, Virginia, August 23, 2001 Red Herring magazine, which conducts high-profile venture capital events in technology centers in the U.S. and Europe, will hold its first mid-Atlantic business strategy/investment event November 5 in Fairfax County, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) announced today.
Called the Red Herring Fairfax County Portfolio, the forum will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Tysons Corner. Fifteen tech start-ups selected by the magazine will present business plans in the fields of infrastructure and wireless technology, security, and life sciences.
Fairfax County is the sole location for a Portfolio conference this year. "Red Herring's decision to hold its only Portfolio event here confirms that Fairfax County is the premier place in this region to bring start-ups and investors together successfully," said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org), which is a leading sponsor of the event.
Start-ups interested in presenting their business plans at the conference have until August 31 to file applications. Companies can request applications by going to www.events.redherring.com and clicking on "nominate a presenting company."
San Francisco-based Red Herring designed the event to focus on the technology sectors burgeoning in Fairfax County and the surrounding area. The event will include briefings on the wireless and infrastructure technology, security and life sciences fields in the region.
In addition to the FCEDA, sponsors of the Portfolio event include Grant Thornton, Morgan Lewis LLP, Pillsbury Winthrop LLP, the Century Club of George Mason University, the National Venture Capital Association, the Northern Virginia Technology Council and Washtech.com. Red Herring also impaneled an advisory committee of area investors and venture capital service providers to help develop the Red Herring program.
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and is a source for up-to-date demographic and economic statistics. The FCEDA maintains a capital attraction program to link entrepreneurs and start-up companies with funding sources. The FCEDA maintains marketing offices in London, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
