Fairfax County technology companies create 1,100 jobs in third quarter '01

Overall economy creates more than 35,000 jobs in last 12 months despite slowdown, FCEDA says

Fairfax County, Virginia, October 10, 2001 — Typically, every new job added spins off two to three jobs in the secondary economy. Fairfax County, one of the nation's largest business and technology centers, has added more than 35,000 jobs to the overall economy in the last 12 months. That growth has helped fund one of the nation's top-rated public school systems and excellent public services. Technology-sector jobs also typically pay higher-than-average salaries, which is why Fairfax County had the nation's highest median household income in 2000 according to the Claritas market research firm.

"We hear a lot about a recessionary economy, but it is important to see that domestic and foreign-owned companies still are adding jobs, creating wealth and expanding the tax base in Fairfax County, which remains the economic engine of the Washington area," said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the FCEDA.

A company new to Fairfax County is Pixoneer Corp. (formerly InterSys), a Korea-based firm that develops software and consulting services for satellite imaging applications. It is one of three Korea-based software companies making announcements during the quarter.

A company expanding in the county is Cox Communications, whose core business is providing cable television programming and includes traditional analog video, digital video and high-speed Internet services.

"Cox Communications has made a huge investment in Fairfax County, paying $1.4 billion for the cable system in late 1999 and spending more than $500 million or $1 million a day to upgrade and transform the system into the most advanced, full-service network in the country," said Scott Broyles, Cox Vice President of Public & Government Affairs. "Fairfax County is a wonderful place to live and work, and we're very pleased to be building the county a state-of-the-art telecommunications platform."

Another company expanding in Fairfax County is RS Information Systems Inc., a 9-year-old information technology, engineering and management-consulting firm that was 44th on Black Enterprise magazine's 2001 list of the 100 largest African American-owned firms in the country.

Fairfax County offers a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, a well-educated workforce and an excellent quality of life.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and is a source for up-to-date demographic and economic statistics.
