Fairfax County flies high with expansion of BAE Systems North America
Defense/aerospace leader to create 1,000 jobs
Fairfax County, Virginia, January 10, 2002 BAE SYSTEMS North America, a global systems, defense and aerospace company, announced today it will expand operations in Fairfax County. The company will create 1,000 new jobs through an investment of $51.6 million. The new positions will range from systems integration and development engineers to network and software engineers.
BAE SYSTEMS North America (www.na.baesystems.com) will open a new 135,000 square foot office complex on Sunset Hills Road in Reston. The building, scheduled for occupancy this fall, will house several units including the company's new Integrated Systems business unit. It eventually will house nearly 400 employees. Additional personnel will be based at customer sites throughout Northern Virginia. The new positions will be in addition to the 2,500 people BAE SYSTEMS currently employs in Virginia.
BAE SYSTEMS North America is a U.S. company employing more than 22,000 in the design, development, integration, manufacture and support of a wide range of advanced aerospace products and intelligent electronic systems. BAE SYSTEMS North America is a subsidiary of United Kingdom-based BAE SYSTEMS, which employs 100,000 people and has annual sales of about $18 billion.
"BAE SYSTEMS is an important part of the aerospace and defense community here in Fairfax County and I am delighted the company has chosen to expand here," said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA). "BAE SYSTEMS has been in Fairfax County for more than 20 years and has made contributions to the community beyond the creation of jobs. It has been involved in every component of Fairfax County's extraordinary quality of life."
Governor Jim Gilmore approved a $50,000 grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund to assist Fairfax County with public infrastructure. The FCEDA and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership assisted BAE SYSTEMS with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide work force training services.
"BAE SYSTEMS is pleased to establish this new business in Fairfax County," said Mark Ronald, BAE SYSTEMS president and chief executive officer. "We received excellent support from the county, and the Reston site is the ideal location to attract the talent we will need to staff this business as well as be close to our customer base."
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists companies by identifying possible office sites and facilities, and is a source for up-to-date demographic and economic statistics.
