Fairfax County companies announce 1,170 new jobs in June, FCEDA says

Defense contractors, five Korean firms among 15 companies that bring job total to almost 4,900 in 2002

Fairfax County, Virginia, July 19, 2002 — Fifteen companies announced in June that 1,170 jobs—most in information technology fields—were or will be added to the Fairfax County economy, according to the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. The companies that worked with the FCEDA to announce new jobs include several defense and government contractors, software and high-speed network providers, and five companies based in South Korea.

Companies that have worked with the FCEDA so far in 2002 have created or will create more than 4,900 jobs. Fairfax County offers a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, a well-educated workforce and an excellent quality of life.

"Fairfax County offers a number of advantages: close proximity to our customers in federal, state and local governments, the U.S. military, the U.S. intelligence community and to other technology businesses; and easy access to airports and high-speed roads," said Bob Urso, president of EER Systems, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corporation. EER specializes in IT services, training and simulation, weapons systems support, aircraft modifications and wide-area security systems.

"Fairfax County's strong technology and customer base, and our location close to the seat of the federal government, is fueling job creation at these companies and is helping the county weather the struggling economy better than other areas," said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the FCEDA.

Typically, every new job in the primary economy spins off about two to three jobs in the secondary economy. Business growth in Fairfax County helps fund one of the nation's top-rated public school systems and excellent public services, and shifts the tax burden away from residents. Technology-sector jobs also typically pay higher-than-average salaries. That is why Fairfax County has the highest median household income of any large locality in the nation, according to the Census Bureau.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and is a source for up-to-date demographic and economic statistics. The FCEDA also has marketing representatives in London, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
