Fairfax County targets Germany and the U.K. in first bioscience-oriented marketing trip

FCEDA president visits science parks, incubators, companies

Fairfax County, Virginia, October 9, 2002 – Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, is in Germany and England this week to visit bioscience companies, incubators, science parks and economic development officials. It is the first FCEDA marketing trip that solely targets bioscience initiatives.

“Germany and the United Kingdom are two of the premier bioscience centers around the world, and there are lots of great opportunities in both places that Fairfax County can take advantage of as we promote the county as a location for foreign-owned bioscience companies,” Gordon said.

On Monday, October 7, Gordon was in Munich to participate in a meeting with German bioscience companies interested in expanding into the U.S. market.

On Tuesday, October 8, he visited Manchester, England, where he toured the Manchester Science Park and Manchester Innovation Ltd. at the University of Manchester. He also met with Eulian Roberts of ANGLE Technology Group, a technology management company that is running the FCEDA’s BioAccelerator. The FCEDA recently conducted a competition to bring a U.K. bioscience company to the BioAccelerator and send a Fairfax company to a U.K. incubator.

On Wednesday, October 9, Gordon toured the Innovation Centre and the Central Science Laboratory in York, and met with representatives of York’s Science City Team and Invest UK, which promotes Great Britain as a location for foreign companies.

On Thursday, October 10, Gordon will tour the Leeds, England, headquarters of Datong Electronics, which has an office in Fairfax County. He then returns to Manchester to meet with representatives of the Northwest Development Agency and NutrEn Technology Ltd.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and is a source for up-to-date demographic and economic statistics. The FCEDA also has marketing representatives in London, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
