Fairfax County soars with opening of BAE SYSTEMS center in Reston

Defense/aerospace leader will create 1,000 jobs in systems integration operation

Fairfax County, Virginia, October 17, 2002 – Fairfax County and Virginia officials today helped BAE SYSTEMS dedicate a new headquarters for its Integrated Systems business unit. The global systems, defense and aerospace company will create 1,000 new jobs over three years through an investment of $51.6 million. The positions range from systems integration and development engineers to network and software engineers.

BAE SYSTEMS opened a new 135,000 square foot office complex at 11487 Sunset Hills Road in Reston. A number of dignitaries were on hand to dedicate the new building, including Gov. Mark R. Warner, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Katherine K. Hanley and Hunter Mill District Supervisor Catherine Hudgins.

Former Gov. Jim Gilmore approved a $50,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Fairfax County with public infrastructure. The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership assisted BAE SYSTEMS with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide work force training services.

“BAE SYSTEMS has been an important part of the aerospace and defense community here in Fairfax County and I am delighted the company has expanded here,” said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the FCEDA. “BAE SYSTEMS has been a tremendous corporate citizen and has been an important factor in our quality of life.”

Mark Ronald, BAE SYSTEMS North America president and CEO, said the Reston building would be “the cornerstone of this critical business – the premier enterprise information systems integrator and service provider for our national security and defense.”
