Fairfax County EDA wins sponsor award at second annual Emerging Business Forum

U.S. Commerce Department, Deloitte & Touche, McGuireWoods and three D.C. companies also win awards for EBF-related efforts

Fairfax County, Virginia, October 22, 2002 – The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) received a Sponsor’s Award today at the Emerging Business Forum. Other EBF awards went to the U.S. Department of Commerce, a law firm, a business consultancy and three Washington, D.C.-area emerging companies. The second annual Forum concludes this afternoon.

The Emerging Business Forum (www.EmergingBusinessForum.org) works to provide minority and female entrepreneurs better access to capital, established business partners, customers and mentors to build their companies. The EBF also showcases the success of culturally diverse entrepreneurs and companies in the Washington area.

The FCEDA won a Sponsor’s Award for creating the Forum. FCEDA staff developed the concept of the Forum after learning two things: That Fairfax County was the home of a significant number of the largest African American- and Hispanic-owned companies in the nation, and that minority entrepreneurs felt they needed better access to sources of capital and established business partners.

“Our goal is to make Fairfax County the best place in the country for successful and growing minority and woman-owned firms, so I am delighted to see those efforts recognized,” said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the FCEDA. “Creating the EBF and working to ensure two very successful Forums has been a tremendous effort by the entire staff of the EDA.”

Other awards presented at the conclusion of the Emerging Business Forum:

Federal Government Award: U.S. Department of Commerce

Champion Awards (one each from Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C.):

  • Networking Technologies and Support, Richmond, Virginia
  • NW Systems Inc., Largo, Maryland
  • The Jair Lynch Companies, Washington, D.C.

    Sponsor Awards:

  • Deloitte & Touche
  • McGuireWoods LLP

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and is a source for up-to-date demographic and economic statistics. The FCEDA also has marketing representatives in London, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
