Fairfax County computes with Microsoft’s new
Innovation and Technology Conference Center
Gov. Warner christens first Microsoft location in Virginia
Fairfax County, Virginia, Sept. 19, 2002 – Gov. Mark Warner and Fairfax County officials today christened the $25 million Microsoft Innovation and Technology Conference Center. The center in Reston is Microsoft’s first location in Virginia.
The 63,000-square foot location at Reston Town Center showcases the latest Microsoft products and technology solutions for government and business. The site allows Microsoft to work with partners and customers on an array of technology initiatives, including secure computing and homeland defense efforts. The center also has business conference facilities for up to 1,000 persons. Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) will employ 100 there. The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership assisted Microsoft throughout the site selection process.
Pete Hayes, Vice President, Microsoft Government, led Gov. Warner, Virginia and Fairfax County officials on a tour of the center.
"Having this center in Fairfax County puts Microsoft in the middle of the Washington, D.C., IT community and will allow us to build our relationship with our business partners and with federal agencies," Hayes said.
"To be a world-class business and technology center, a community needs world-class businesses. Microsoft is a world leader in so many ways and its presence in Fairfax County adds even more luster to the world-class business environment we have built," said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the FCEDA.
Microsoft also announced a $61,000 cash and technology grant to Reston Interfaith, a nonprofit human services organization that provides food, shelter, affordable housing, child care and other community services, such as jobs skills training.
The FCEDA (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County, just outside Washington, D.C., as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and is a source for up-to-date demographic and economic statistics. The FCEDA also has marketing representatives in London, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
