or relocations
Fairfax County, Virginia, April 30, 2003—Some 752 jobs – most in information technology fields – were or will be added to the Fairfax County economy by 30 companies that worked with the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) during the first three months of 2003, according to the FCEDA.
Large announcements in the first quarter came from companies already doing business in Fairfax County such as engineering services firm UTD Inc. (95 jobs), defense contractor Proxtronics Inc. (175 jobs), and Sunrise Senior Living, one of the nation’s largest providers of senior living services (140 jobs). Technology companies from Canada, Israel and Korea also announced new operations in Fairfax County, as did the first firms to locate here from Malaysia and Turkey.
Typically, every new job in the primary economy spins off about two to three jobs in the secondary economy. Fairfax County offers a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, the nation’s best-educated workforce and an excellent quality of life.
Business growth in Fairfax County has helped fund one of the nation’s top-rated public school systems and excellent public services. Technology-sector jobs also typically pay higher than average salaries, which is one reason Fairfax County has the nation’s highest median family income, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
“We left Fairfax County for several years but came back because the Springfield area is closer to our client base and it is far more convenient for our employees who work with federal agencies,” said Bob Fithian, CEO of UTD Inc.
“We’re excited to see this kind of job growth,” said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the FCEDA. “Fairfax County’s economy has struggled but we maintain a competitive advantage over other office markets. And attracting our first firms from Malaysia and Turkey is a direct result of our efforts to attract leading-edge companies from around the world, which makes our economy even more diversified and stable.”
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center.
