Eight German biotech companies vie for space in U.S. business incubator
Expert panel to rate entries; winner to be announced in September
Fairfax County, Virginia, June 20, 2003—Eight German biotech companies have entered a competition to win free space and business development services in a U.S. business incubator. The competition to help a German company expand into the U.S. market is being coordinated by two German biotechnology groups—Munich-based BioM AG and BioTOP Berlin Brandenburg—and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA).
The winning firm will get a free year of space and business development services—a €50,000 ($55,000) package—in the Fairfax County BioAccelerator, a new bioscience business incubator minutes from Washington, D.C.
A panel of experts with backgrounds in biotechnology, venture capital and the law will evaluate the entries. The winning firm will be announced in September.
The eight companies competing for the BioAccelerator space and services:
- Axxima Pharmaceuticals AG, Munich, drug discovery and development.
- Biotix GmbH, Potsdam, hardware for drug discovery and development.
- conoGenetix biosciences GmbH, Martinsried, drug discovery and development
- 4SC AG, Martinsried, drug discovery and development.
- Jerini AG, Berlin, drug discovery and development.
- Munich Biotech AG, Neuried, drug discovery and development.
- ProBioGen AG, Berlin, manufacturer of pharmaceutical material for clinical trials.
- Revotar Biopharmaceuticals AG, Hennigsdorf, clinical studies and drug design.
“To have eight German companies enter a transatlantic competition is a testament to the vitality of the German biotech community and a recognition of the opportunities available in the Fairfax-Washington area thanks to the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration and federal labs,” said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the FCEDA.
The FCEDA also is holding a competition for British biotech firms to win space in the BioAccelerator. Entries in that competition are due by July 21st.
