Sprint Nextel calls Fairfax County its executive headquarters

Merged company is third largest wireless carrier in the U.S.

Fairfax County, Virginia, December 15, 2004 -- Sprint Nextel, the company created by the merger of Fairfax County-based Nextel Communications and Overland Park, Kansas-based Sprint Communications, announced today that Fairfax County will be its executive headquarters. Overland Park, Kansas, will be the company’s operational headquarters.

Before the merger, Nextel employed between 2,000 and 3,000 in Fairfax County, most at its heaquarters in the community of Reston. Sprint employed between 1,000 and 2,000 in Fairfax County. The new company is the third largest wireless communications carrier in the United States with 40 million customers.

“Nextel was one of six Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Fairfax County, and Sprint has long had a major presence in Fairfax County as well. By establishing its executive headquarters in Reston, the new corporation gives further credence to the reputation of Fairfax County as a great place for telecommunications companies and other technology businesses,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA).
