Fairfax County EDA sponsors D.C. area’s
first Digital Media Conference
County’s technology economy produces leaders in digital media industry
Fairfax County, Virginia, June 18, 2004 – The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) is sponsoring the Digital Media Conference presented today by Potomac Tech Wire and Digital Media Wire at the Hilton McLean in Tysons Corner. The conference will explore new ways of distribution information and entertainment via television, radio, the Internet and wireless devices.
“The leading companies in many of the fields of technology are a part of the Fairfax County business community. This is certainly true of the digital media industry. These companies have created a recognition of Fairfax County as an innovative and entrepreneurial community,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and chief executive of the FCEDA.
Dr. Gordon noted that six Fairfax County companies are sponsoring the conference or have provided speakers:
• Cinea (technology to prevent video piracy)
• comScore Networks (consumer Web site behavior measurement)
• Convera (document storage and retrieval)
• Mythic Entertainment (interactive game developer)
• Nextel Communications (wireless phone carrier – one of six Fortune 500 companies based in Fairfax County)
• USA Today (one of the 10 most popular news Web sites – owned by Gannett, another Fortune 500 company based in Fairfax County)
• Ztango (wireless messaging and multimedia products)
Fairfax County’s business community includes about 4,800 technology companies. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported June 2 that the northern Virginia region added more than 48,000 jobs between April 2003 and April 2004, which were the largest job creation numbers in the country. Fairfax County has about a 2 percent unemployment rate.
Business growth helps Fairfax County fund public services such as the nation’s top-rated public school systems that contribute to the quality of life. Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport and a well-educated workforce.
The FCEDA (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA has a program to assist small, minority and woman-owned firms. The FCEDA also maintains marketing offices in London, Frankfurt and Tokyo, and in 2004 will open offices in Bangalore, India, and Tel Aviv, Israel.
