Fairfax County EDA sponsors summer-long “America Celebrates” program
100 days of events honor the World War II Memorial and veterans
Fairfax County, Virginia, June 30, 2004 —The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) is proud to sponsor “America Celebrates the Greatest Generation,” a summer-long tribute to the heroism of the World War II generation.
The 100-day program, organized by the Washington, DC Convention and Tourism Corporation (WCTC)/American Experience Foundation and Cultural Tourism DC, includes more than 140 WWII-themed exhibitions, performances, walking tours, restaurant experiences and hotel packages that pay tribute to the men and women who served in World War II and on the home front. Music, art, dance, theatre, film and literature will all play a part in the summer-long salute.
The FCEDA’s sponsorship assisted the WCTC with program support. Other sponsors include US Airways, Starbucks, Museums Washington Magazine, Gannett Foundation/USA Today, Charles Steward Mott Foundation and Guest Services.
“Having the Fairfax County EDA as an integral part of this effort has been crucial to its ongoing success,” said Bill Hanbury, president of the WCTC.
“It is an honor for Fairfax County to be an integral part of the “America Celebrates” program,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA. “The program celebrates the sacrifices and achievements of great Americans and spotlights Fairfax County and the Washington area as a world-class business and tourism destination.
Events taking place in Fairfax County include special programs at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House, George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, the Herndon Dulles Visitors Center and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.
The FCEDA (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA has a program to assist small, minority and woman-owned firms.
