Four Fairfax County IT-related companies to create 8,880 jobs

Gov. Warner announces expansions that are part of hot regional economy

Fairfax County, Virginia, November 17, 2004 Four prominent IT-related companies will create more than 11,000 jobs in Virginia, including at least 8880 in Fairfax County, Gov. Mark R. Warner announced today. The jobs, many of which will focus on homeland security, will pay an average of $76,000 annually, the governor’s office said.

Gov. Warner made the announcement following an event at the new Herndon location of management and technology consultant Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. Booz Allen, which is based in the Tysons Corner area of Fairfax County and already is one of the largest employers in the county with between 6,000 and 7,000 employees, will create up to 4,600 more jobs here through a $130 million investment.

The other three companies announced by the governor that will create jobs are:

  • Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), the largest employee-owned engineering and research company, which will add 4,515 jobs in the state, including 2,900 in Fairfax County.
  • SRA International, an information technology services provider that is based in Fairfax, announced the creation of 1,400 jobs in Virginia of which 780 will be in Fairfax County. SRA already employs between 1,000 and 2,000 in Fairfax County.
  • PricewaterhouseCoopers, the largest accounting firm in the Washington area, is adding 600 new jobs in Fairfax County. PwC is expanding its practice in Tysons Corner in offices being built near a proposed Metro stop.

Fairfax County and northern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., have had the strongest regional economy in the United States for the last two years. More than 67,000 jobs have been created in Fairfax County in the last two years, according to Dr. Stephen Fuller of the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University.

“We are delighted that these companies are creating new jobs for Fairfax County residents,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA. “These companies are good corporate citizens. And, as they expand here and fill up office space, they add to our commercial tax base that helps pay for public schools and other county services that our residents need.”

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. FCEDA programs help large and small businesses locate and expand in the county. The FCEDA maintains overseas offices in London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Tel Aviv and Bangalore.
