Fairfax County EDA works with 51 companies that will create 3,885 jobs
Job creation fuels hottest regional economy in the U.S .
Fairfax County , Virginia, October 29, 2004 — More than 3,800 jobs – many in information technology-related fields – were or will be added to the Fairfax County economy by 51 companies that utilized Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) services and resources during July, August and September. These new jobs are examples of the growth that is making Washington, D.C., the hottest regional economy in the country with more than 70,000 jobs created in the last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The largest announcements came from IBM, which announced it will create 1,250 new jobs in Fairfax County, and TITAN Corporation, which will create 400 jobs.
Business growth helps Fairfax County fund public services such as the nation’s top-rated public school systems that contribute to the quality of life. Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport and a well-educated workforce
“ Virginia is creating a fertile environment for innovation that attracts companies and jobs,” said Christopher G. Caine, IBM vice president of governmental programs and the corporation's senior state executive for the commonwealth. " Virginia is demonstrating innovative thinking and contemporary programs that bring genuine value to the state and Fairfax County."
“We are pleased to be a new corporate citizen of Fairfax County and the dynamic business community that has grown up in this area,” said Scott Calhoun, chief operating officer at Matrix Technologies Inc., which offers Internet telephone services. “The energy and intellectual capital that exists in this area, and the ease with which we will now be able to network in this community, will be a valuable corporate asset.”
“These jobs are in a wide range of industries, some related to the private sector and others related to the federal government. It’s this diversity that keeps our economy strong,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA.
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County, just outside Washington, D.C., as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists businesses by identifying possible sites, and is a source for up-to-date demographic and economic statistics. The FCEDA’s Capital Attraction Program links technology entrepreneurs with potential investors, and another program supports the growth of small and minority-owned companies. The FCEDA maintains overseas marketing offices in Bangalore, Frankfurt, London, Tel Aviv and Tokyo.
