IBM consultation results in creation of 1,250
IT-focused jobs in Fairfax County
Investment by the company will total $10 million
Fairfax County , Virginia, September 27, 2004 — IBM, the world’s largest information technology company, will invest $10 million to expand its presence in Fairfax County and create 1,250 job opportunities, Gov. Mark Warner announced today at the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Information Technology Symposium in Norfolk.
IBM will lease additional space in a 200,000 square-foot building on Federal Systems Drive in the Fair Lakes section of Fairfax County. The new jobs are part of IBM’s public sector consulting unit, where average salaries will be higher than $90,000, the company said. The expansion is part of IBM’s plan to create 18,800 jobs around the world this year.
Business growth helps Fairfax County fund public services such as the nation’s top-rated public school systems that contribute to the quality of life. Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, and a well-educated workforce.
“ Fairfax County prides itself on being home to the most exciting and most successful companies in the world. There is no greater confirmation of that than this announcement by IBM – clearly one of the world’s most successful and respected companies,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority.
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority worked with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to prepare a package for IBM. Governor Warner approved a $600,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Fairfax County with community infrastructure improvements near the IBM site. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance also will provide workforce training services.
