Fairfax County soars with 700 new jobs
created by aerospace giant BAE Systems

Company opens work center for federal client

Fairfax County , Virginia, May 16, 2005 -- BAE Systems, a leading defense, electronics, information systems and technology services company, announced today it will expand operations in Fairfax County. The company will create 700 jobs over the next three years. The new business will generate an investment of $25 million and establish an information technology work center to support the company’s expanding federal IT business.

BAE Systems is one of the top ten suppliers to the U.S. Department of Defense. It also is one of the largest technology employers in Fairfax County. In 2002 it opened a 135,000 square-foot building in Reston that supports both its federal and DoD markets.

Bill Shernit, president, BAE Systems Information Technology, explained BAE Systems’ rationale for choosing Virginia again: “ Virginia has a strong, pro-business climate, an educated workforce, and an excellent communications infrastructure. Northern Virginia provides us close proximity to our major federal customers and provides a very friendly and hospitable environment for our workforce.”

“BAE Systems has been a part of the Fairfax County business community for decades. It has contributed greatly to Fairfax County’s strong technology and defense sectors as well as the community, and I am delighted that the company chose to expand its presence here,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. A company of this caliber helps to put Fairfax County on the world’s corporate map.”

Business growth helps Fairfax County fund public services such as the nation’s top-rated public school systems that contribute to the quality of life. Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, and a well-educated workforce.

The FCEDA and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership assisted BAE Systems with its decision to expand. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training through its Workforce Services Program. The company also might be eligible to receive major business facility jobs tax credits through the state.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and provides demographic and economic statistics. The FCEDA’s Capital Attraction Program links technology entrepreneurs with potential investors, and another program supports the growth of small and minority-owned companies. The FCEDA maintains overseas offices in Bangalore, Frankfurt, London, Seoul and Tel Aviv.
