Fairfax is only U.S. county represented at Asian-Pacific economic development forum in South Korea

Fairfax County , Virginia, November 10, 2005—Fairfax is the only United States county represented at APEC Investment Opportunities 2005, which is set for Nov. 16 and 17 in Busan ( Pusan), South Korea. Fairfax County will be part of a U.S. presentation to the group on Nov. 16.

APEC, or Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, is a Singapore-based forum for promoting economic growth, cooperation, free trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. At APEC Investment Opportunities 2005, 21 member nations will showcase their competitive advantages as they promote trade and growth within the group. The theme of the 2005 forum is "Towards One Community: Meet the Challenge, Make the Change."

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) has had a marketing/investment representative in Asia since 1997. This year the FCEDA hired a representative in South Korea, J.J. Huh, to work with Korean companies interested in expanding into the U.S. market.

Among APEC-member nations, 56 companies from Korea have set up operations in Fairfax County. So have 27 from Canada, 20 from Japan, four from Australia and one from China.

“ Fairfax County has been a leader among U.S. counties in working with Asian companies that are interested in expanding in the U.S., and our representation at the APEC forum is another sign of our leadership in international economic development efforts,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA.

Business growth helps Fairfax County fund public services, such as the nation’s top-rated school system, that contribute to the quality of life of its residents. Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, and a well-educated workforce.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org), which has been recognized by Site Selection magazine as one of the top economic development groups, promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and provides demographic and economic statistics. The FCEDA’s Capital Attraction Program links technology entrepreneurs with potential investors, and another program supports the growth of small and minority-owned companies. The FCEDA maintains overseas offices in Bangalore, Frankfurt, London, Seoul and Tel Aviv.
