Fairfax County EDA president pens second edition of book on strategic planning for local governments
Fairfax County, Virginia USA, September 14, 2005 – Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) today announced the release of the second edition of his book “Strategic Planning for Local Government.”
Dr. Gordon wrote the first edition of the book in 1993. For the second edition, he revisited the strategic plans of several communities included in the 1993 volume to see how they were implemented and to see what lessons could be learned from their experiences.
“Strategic Planning for Local Government,” published by The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) offers step-by-step guidance on preparing a local strategic plan to help local government leaders anticipate and shape the future of their communities. Dr. Gordon based much of the book on case studies drawn from strategic plans of communities from across the United States.
Dr. Gordon has advised many communities and organizations in Fairfax County and around the Washington, D.C., area, the U.S. and the world on strategic planning. “It takes dedicated local officials and residents to develop and execute a strategic planning process, but strategic planning is something that every type of organization needs to do in order to succeed,” he said.
Dr. Gordon has served with the FCEDA since 1983. He holds a bachelor’s degree from The Citadel, a master’s degree from George Washington University, and a doctorate in international economics from The Catholic University of America. He is the author of nine books and numerous articles on strategic planning, economic development, leadership styles and other management topics.
“Strategic Planning for Local Government” is available on the ICMA Web site (www.icma.org) and on Amazon.com.
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org), which has been recognized by Site Selection magazine as one of the top economic development groups, promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center.
