FCEDA’s Gordon keynotes Virginia minority business conference

Virginia Business Opportunity Fair held in Fairfax County for the first time

Fairfax County, Virginia USA, May 5, 2006 – Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) will be a keynote speaker at the Virginia Business Opportunity Fair (VBOF) on Monday, May 8. The conference is being held in Fairfax County, the first time it is being held outside of Richmond in 16 years.

The fair links large government contractors and corporations with minority-owned businesses to assist with procurement activities and is the largest minority business conference of its kind on the east coast. The Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council (VMSDC) organizes the event which begins Sunday, May 7 and continues through May 9 at the Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles in Chantilly.

Gordon will give an overview of Fairfax County’s business community and detail the large and dynamic minority business sectors.

“It is a great honor for Fairfax County to host the 2006 Virginia Business Opportunity Fair,” said Gordon. “ Fairfax County has long been recognized as the location of choice for entrepreneurs of all backgrounds to build and grow a business. This is an opportunity to spotlight the tremendous things happening here and to tell this group how much we value diversity.”

Fairfax County is home to six of the 100 largest African American-owned companies in the United States, and 11 of the 500 largest Hispanic-owned companies in the nation, according to Black Enterprise and Hispanic Business magazines.

Bus iness growth helps Fairfax County fund public services such as a top-ranked public school system and library, public safety, social services and park systems that improve the quality of life. Fairfax County offers diverse real estate options near Washington, D.C., access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, a business community based on technology and professional services, and a well-educated workforce.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority ( www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org), which has been recognized by Site Selection magazine as one of the top economic development groups, promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA assists businesses by identifying possible sites and facilities, and provides demographic and economic statistics.
