Fairfax County again tops in household
income level among large U.S. counties
County crosses threshold with median household income of $100,318 per year
Fairfax County, Virginia USA, August 29, 2007– Fairfax County again ranks first among large U.S. counties (population 250,000 plus) with a median household income of $100,318, according to just-released 2006 American Community Survey data published by the Census Bureau. Fairfax is the first large county to top $100,000 in median household income. The U.S. median is $48,451.
Neighboring Loudoun County, Virginia, was second on the list with a median household income of $99,371. Thirty-nine percent of Loudoun residents work in Fairfax County, according to the 2000 Census.
“For almost 30 years Fairfax County has supported a vigorous economic development program that has attracted and retained employers that have created high-quality, high-salaried jobs, many in technology and professional services industries, and the income numbers show the benefit of that effort to residents,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA). “The benefits of this economic growth also extend to the rest of the Washington region as well as the rest of Virginia.”
Time magazine this year called Fairfax County "one of the great success stories of our time," and a U.S. Labor Department study described Fairfax County the private-sector job-creation leader in the Washington area. Business growth helps Fairfax County fund public services, such as the nation’s top-rated school system and library, park, public safety and human services, which contribute to the quality of life of its residents. Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, and a well-educated workforce.
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA’s Capital Attraction Program links technology entrepreneurs with potential investors. Another program supports the growth of minority- and woman-owned businesses. The FCEDA maintains offices in Silicon Valley, Bangalore, Frankfurt, London, Seoul and Tel Aviv.
