Fairfax County EDA praises decision to begin air service
between Washington and Beijing
United Airlines could begin capital-to-capital service as early as March 25
Fairfax County, Virginia USA, January 9,2006 – Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, today praised the decision by the U.S. Department of Transportation to allow United Airlines to begin nonstop air service between Washington Dulles International Airport and Beijing, China.
“Business people in the Washington area that want to do business in China will be the big winners here, and the community wins too,” Gordon said. “Whenever air service to new markets opens up, there is a significant increase in activity between local businesses and those markets. That new business will translate into new jobs, wealth generation, and additional tax revenues from which the county can provide public services.”
United called its proposal the capital-to-capital route and beat out three other airlines for U.S.-Beijing service. Washington Dulles International Airport, on Fairfax County’s western border, is 21 miles from Washington, D.C. It handled more than 21 million passengers in 2006, including more than 4 million passengers on international flights. Airlines serving Dulles offer non-stop Non-stop service to 78 domestic and 39 international locations.
Fairfax County is the economic engine of the Washington area with more than 4,900 technology companies, 350 foreign-owned companies and more than 600,000 payroll jobs.
Business growth helps Fairfax County fund public services, such as the nation’s top-rated school system and library, park, public safety and human services, which contribute to the quality of life of residents.
