Fairfax County EDA President/CEO Gerald Gordon honored by International Economic Development Council
Gordon designated Fellow Member for “unusual stature,” accomplishments
Fairfax County, Virginia USA, November 1, 2007 —The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) honored Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA), with its Fellow Member designation.
IEDC cited Dr. Gordon for achieving “unusual stature” in the field of economic development and closely related disciplines, during its annual conference, September 16-19. IEDC, located in Washington, D.C., provides leadership and excellence in economic development for communities, members and partners.
“The term ‘unusual stature’ characterizes a member's significant contributions to the profession through service to IEDC and/or academic endeavors directly related to the practice of economic development," said Ronnie L. Bryant, chairman of IEDC. “Dr. Gordon serves as a prime example of one who fully embodies this designation.”
“I regard recognition from one’s own peers to be the greatest honor one can achieve," Gordon said. “But, I must share that recognition with many others: elected officials, FCEDA commissioners and a great team of professionals on the FCEDA staff.”
Gordon has been with the FCEDA since 1983. In that time, office space in the county has grown from 32 million square feet to more than 105 million square feet, and jobs in the county increased from 243,000 to more than 600,000. The real estate tax rate has decreased from $1.47 to 89 cents per $100 of assessed value. Dr. Gordon was instrumental in organizing the 2007 National Conference on the Creative Economy, in creating the Emerging Business Forum, and in bringing the 1998 World Congress on Information Technology to Fairfax County. In 2005, Site Selection magazine named the FCEDA one of the top 10 economic development organizations in North America.
Time magazine this year called Fairfax County, just outside Washington, D.C., “one of the great economic success stories of our time.” Business growth helps Fairfax County fund public services such as a top-ranked public school system that improve the quality of life. Fairfax County offers a well-educated workforce, diverse real estate opportunities, access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, and a creative economy based on technology and professional services.
The FCEDA (www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org) promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center. The FCEDA maintains offices in Silicon Valley, Bangalore, Frankfurt, London, Seoul and Tel Aviv.
