1998 World Congress on Information Technology Produces Enormous Benefits for Fairfax County

From Internet Servers to Food Services, the World Congress is Big Business in Fairfax County

Fairfax County, Virginia, June 23, 1998 — For Fairfax County, Virginia, hosting the 1998 World Congress on Information Technology is more than a unique opportunity to welcome 1,800 of the world’s leaders in industry, government, and academia. It is big business. The event, hailed as one of the most important forums for information technology in this era, will produce immediate and long-lasting results for Fairfax County.

For the 2,000 information technology companies located in Fairfax County, the 1998 World Congress shines a spotlight on the global leadership of the local IT community. But while the locally based technology companies might be the most obvious benefactors, the total impact of the 1998 World Congress on Fairfax County is far-reaching.

According to economist Dr. Stephen Fuller, professor of public policy at George Mason University, an estimated $12 million will be generated in Fairfax County as a result of the 1998 World Congress. "Long-term, the identification of Fairfax County as a major center of information technology will attract new business, new international partnerships, venture capital and skilled workers," said Fuller. "More short-term, we can already see the economic benefits of the World Congress in Fairfax County’s hospitality and service industries alone."

Fairfax County is internationally known for its hospitality industry. From luxury hotels to elegant restaurants and historic attractions, Fairfax County’s hospitality businesses are further demonstrating their excellence to the international community.

According to Patricia Woolsey, Chairman of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, "The 1998 World Congress on Information Technology will allow the international business community to witness the outstanding attributes of Fairfax County. Our successes will be measured by our continued economic growth."

Fairfax County was awarded the 1998 World Congress on Information Technology as a result of the efforts by the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) and in clear recognition of the County’s prominence in the information technology industry.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority provides a wide array of services and information designed to promote Fairfax County as a business location for domestic and international companies and organizations.
