More Fairfax County Businesses Make Lists of Top U.S. Minority Firms

Fairfax County, Virginia, September 22, 1998— Fairfax County is the home of an increasing number of the nation's top-ranked African-American and Hispanic-owned companies.

The latest ranking of the 1998 Hispanic Business High-Tech 50 in Hispanic Business magazine shows seven Hispanic-owned companies located in Fairfax County, up from five companies last year.

Black Enterprise also recently ranked seven Fairfax County businesses among its top 100 African-American-owned firms, up from five companies in 1997.

"We're delighted that more and more minority-owned companies are locating in Fairfax County," said Patricia M. Woolsey, chairman of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority Commission. "The County is a wonderful place for any emerging information technology company that wants to start and grow a business."

The seven Fairfax County firms in the "1998 Hispanic Business High-tech 50" are:

  • Sherikon Inc. of Chantilly (#8)
  • GCI Information Services Inc. of McLean (#28)
  • Technautics Inc. of Falls Church (#40)
  • Comprehensive Technologies Intl. Inc. of Fairfax (#44)
  • Kemron Environmental Services, Inc. of Vienna (#48)
  • Geologics Corp. of Alexandria (#49)
  • BRTRC Inc. of Fairfax (#50)

Black Enterprise ranked these Fairfax County companies among the nation's 100 largest African-American-owned businesses:

  • Innovative Logistics Techniques Inc. of McLean (#51)
  • Thompson Hospitality Corp. of Reston (#54)
  • Metters Industries Inc. of McLean (#56)
  • Universal Systems & Technology Inc. (UNITECH) of Fairfax (#65)
  • Intellisys Technology Corp. of Fairfax (#75)
  • United Communications Systems, Inc. of McLean (#86)
  • Jil Information Systems, Inc. of Vienna (#92)

The increase in African-American- and Hispanic-owned businesses in Fairfax County is part of a national trend. The latest data from the Census Bureau lists 771,708 Hispanic-owned companies, up by 83 percent from 422,373 companies in 1987. In Fairfax County, the Hispanic-owned companies almost tripled, zooming to 3,110 from 1,076 in 1987.

Nationally, the number of African-American-owned companies soared to 620,912, up by 46 percent from 424,165 companies in 1987. The number of black-owned businesses in Fairfax County rose to 2,264, up from 1,322 firms in 1987.
