94 Companies Expand or Relocate to Fairfax County During 1998
Fairfax County, Virginia, April 13, 1999 Ninety-four companies expanded or relocated their operations in Fairfax County during 1998 as a direct result of working with the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA). More than 7,000 new jobs will be added to the County’s economy because of these announcements, according to the FCEDA’s recently released Annual Report. Typically, it is assumed that every new job results in the creation of two to three additional jobs in other sectors of the economy.
"This is a tremendous location to start and grow a business because companies find what they need in Fairfax County: a superior infrastructure including education and telecommunications access to domestic and international markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, highly skilled employees and an excellent quality of life," said Gerald L. Gordon, President of the FCEDA.
Thirty-six percent of the 1998 announcements were businesses that relocated to the County from another area or were start-ups with the remaining representing companies expanding their businesses in Fairfax County. Sixty-four percent of the FCEDA announcements are companies working in technology fields. Additionally, 11 foreign-owned firms from six different countries made new investments in the County during the year, bringing the total number of foreign-owned firms to 123 and the employment base to more than 8,800 jobs.
