Five Northern Virginia companies make Fortune’s "Best 100" list
Fairfax County, Virginia, December 27, 1999 Five Northern Virginia-based companies, including four based in Fairfax County, have made Fortune magazine’s ranks of the 100 best companies to work for in America. The companies will be honored at a January 19, 2000, board meeting of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce.
The Northern Virginia companies, their headquarters location, Web sites, and rankings in the January 10, 2000, edition of Fortune (www.fortune.com):
- Internet service provider America Online, Dulles, 51.
- Software developer MicroStrategy, Vienna, 58.
- Credit card issuer Capital One Financial Corp., Falls Church, 60.
- Technology consultant SRA International Inc., Fairfax, 63.
- Technology consultant American Management Systems Inc., Fairfax, 74.
Why were the Fairfax County-based companies cited? Fortune noted MicroStrategy’s unusual perk of taking all employees on a weeklong cruise in January. The magazine lauded Capital One’s practice of making all employees shareholders, and that many AOL employees are shareholders. Fortune cited the heavy investment that SRA International makes in employee training. And the magazine noted the emphasis on flextime and telecommuting at AMS.
"The companies selected for this list are another demonstration that Fairfax County is a great place to work, live and play," said Gerald L. Gordon, president of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority.
"These companies are not only great places to work, they are all industry leaders who have achieved remarkable success because they understand what it takes to attract and keep talented employees," said James W. Dyke Jr., chairman of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and a partner at the law firm of McGuire Woods Battle & Boothe.
The January 19 chamber board meeting will be at the Reston Hyatt hotel. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. Check the chamber Web site (www.fccc.org) for more details.
