Giant Food parent company will move to Fairfax County
Fairfax County, Virginia, June 11, 1999 Gerald L. Gordon, president of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, welcomed the Dutch parent of Giant Food Inc. to the growing number of international companies locating in Fairfax County.
Royal Ahold, based in Zaandam, Netherlands, announced Friday it would relocate its American headquarters from Atlanta to Westfields Corporate Park in Chantilly at the end of the summer. About 65 executives and assistants work at the Ahold USA office that supports Ahold’s five U.S. operating companies.
"I am delighted to welcome Royal Ahold to Fairfax County," Gordon said. "The U.S. headquarters of Royal Ahold will be a substantial addition to Fairfax County’s thriving international community."
"After considering several international locations, Royal Ahold chose Fairfax County because of its established corporate community," Gordon said. "We look forward to working with them as they relocate their employees to Fairfax County."
Royal Ahold purchased Corporate Pointe 2 on Newbrook Drive in the Westfields complex. The building has about 66,000 square feet of office space. The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority assisted Royal Ahold in finding a location that suited its needs.
Hans Gobes, senior vice president for communications at Royal Ahold, said the Fairfax County location was a better fit for its American operations than Atlanta. "It’s much closer to where we do business," Gobes said. "Also, because of the location of Dulles International Airport we can fly in and out easily. It all fits beautifully. We feel very good about this."
In addition to the Landover, Md.,-based Giant Food, Ahold owns grocery chains based in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New York state.
More than 130 international companies have offices in Fairfax County. On Thursday, Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. (TAIS) of Irvine, Calif., announced it would open the Toshiba Consulting Center at 12030 Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston. The Reston office will provide information technology consultant services for customers in the Japanese domestic market.
TAIS is part of a subsidiary of the $42 billion Toshiba Corp., the seventh largest computer and electronics company.
