Intel inside Fairfax County
Company will open first East Coast Internet service center in the county
Fairfax County, Virginia, September 28, 1999 Fairfax County officials today hailed the announcement by Intel Corp. to open a $130 million Internet service center in the county. The center will be the first East Coast location of Intel’s new Online Services subsidiary.
Intel intends to open the 73,000-square foot service center early in 2000, and expects to hire up to 250 people. The data center will be in the Lafayette Technology Center in Chantilly, south of Washington Dulles International Airport.
"To be a world class center of commerce and trade, a community needs world-class businesses. For Fairfax County’s technology community, Intel makes us world class," said Gerald L. Gordon, President of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority.
"Intel’s decision to open a data center bolsters Fairfax County’s reputation as the home of the Internet," said Katherine K. Hanley, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. "I am thrilled that the Economic Development Authority and the county’s planning and zoning offices were able to make the arrangements needed to get Intel’s operation here going as quickly as possible." FCEDA marketing and real estate managers supported Intel’s site selection team.
The Fairfax County service center will contain 8,000 computer servers running the web sites and e-commerce activities of numerous companies, according to Intel officials. The company’s other service center is in Santa Clara, Calif.
Intel is the latest company to open a "web hosting" data center in Fairfax County. About 18 other firms also have data centers in the county. Fairfax County is home of the Internet because more than 50 percent of worldwide Internet traffic moves through the county. Intel officials cited that concentration of Internet traffic as a main reason to locate in Virginia. Internet service providers America Online, UUNet and PSINet have facilities in Fairfax County.
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority provides a wide array of services and information designed to promote Fairfax County as a world center of commerce and trade. Information about the FCEDA’s programs and services is available on the FCEDA’s Web page at www.FairfaxCountyEDA.org.
