What is the origin of your company?
Equinix was founded by Jay Adelson and Al Avery, who were conducting research at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) where they developed an idea that would later become the PAIX®*, or the Palo Alto Internet Exchange. During this time, the Internet was expanding at an unprecedented rate.

Early on, Adelson and Avery recognized the need to provide physical connection points where networks could interconnect via a neutral party to avoid the competing interests of telecommunication providers. Adelson and Avery called this neutral party a Neutral Internet Exchange (NIX).

Their business idea was simple, yet groundbreaking - create physical places for networks to exchange critical information.

Adelson and Avery sought to unite major networks and interconnect content companies. They built data centers not just for colocation but for exchanging traffic. In April of 1998, several of Silicon Valley’s elite invested in their idea and on June 22, 1998, Equinix was incorporated.

What is the main business focus of your Fairfax County office? 
Equinix’s Reston office is the largest regional office outside of the Redwood City, Calif. headquarters.  The Reston office supports regional sales teams, marketing, customer care and the real estate and facilities groups.

Who are your primary customers? 
Customers do business at Equinix as part of a vital ecosystem, where their most critical information assets are protected and connected. Network and service provider customers include AT&T, British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, KDDI, NTT, Singtel, Sprint and Verizon. Enterprise and content provider customers include Adobe Software, IBM, Electronic Arts, Facebook, General Electric, Google, HP, Microsoft, Yahoo! and Sony.

What sets you apart from your competitors? 
Platform Equinix connects more than 4,000 enterprises, cloud and digital content, and financial companies including more than 675 network service providers to help them grow their businesses, improve application performance and protect their vital digital assets.

What are the advantages of a Fairfax County location for your business? 
The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which serves as the eastern hub of Internet traffic exchange in the United States, is an important metropolitan area for Equinix and its customers. Equinix data centers in the D.C. metro area include rich ecosystems that allow network and content services providers, cloud and IT services, and enterprise and federal government customers to quickly and efficiently exchange critical business data with their strategic partners.
