LMI

When was your company established?
LMI was established in 1961 (we’re approaching our 50th anniversary!). We are a nonprofit, fact-finding consultancy and research organization free of corporate ties, and devoted to solving some of the federal government’s most difficult problems.

What is the origin of your company name?
LMI stands for “Logistics Management Institute,” which reflects the founding mission of the organization by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara to support the Department of Defense’s logistics and procurement needs. LMI still operates the world’s most advanced logistics consulting group, but also provides world-class expertise across five other mission areas: acquisition, facilities and asset management, financial management, information and technology, and organizations and human capital to nearly every federal department and agency.

Who owns your company?
LMI is a not-for-profit, and mission-driven, which reflects our organization’s desire to provide independent solutions to advancing government management. LMI is still governed by a Board of Trustees, and by operating free of commercial and political interest, is able to serve as a unique, trusted advisor to government managers. The result is bringing the best, most creative management and technical minds to bear on solving complex issues.

What is the main business focus of your Fairfax County office?
The staff at our McLean headquarters focuses on the full range of LMI’s capabilities, including logistics, information management, facilities management, organizational improvement, acquisition and financial management, and policy support, with dedicated staff focusing on energy and environment, healthcare systems, homeland security, and intelligence programs.

Who are your primary customers?
Although founded to support the Department of Defense, LMI’s client base now includes virtually every department and agency in the federal government. We are continually adding new skills and capabilities to our extraordinary workforce, enabling us to respond even more effectively to clients’ concerns.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
LMI offers a variety of unique capabilities, not the least of which is our not-for-profit status. By being not-for-profit, we offer our clients a truly independent voice in helping them with their problems. LMI also offers superior minds in these problem-solving initiatives: approximately 70 percent of our staff members hold master’s degrees or doctorates, giving us remarkable subject matter depth to complement our broad experience. In addition, we are able to expand our intellectual capital through the work done at the LMI Research Institute, which pursues answers to the most complex problems facing government and disseminates its findings through a variety of respected publications, with the goal of reaching key decision makers. By sponsoring this research, LMI is at the forefront of the development of new ideas, methods and processes to bring more precision to public-sector management. Finally, LMI’s work is buoyed by an enviable customer satisfaction rate, which regularly shows why government leaders look to us to solve their most sensitive and critical problems—and then come back after the work is done with a new challenge for us. Since 2006, our clients have continuously returned customer satisfaction scores above 99 percent.

How many employees do you have and how many do you anticipate hiring in the next 12 months?
LMI currently is home to more than 900 employees. We also partner with a number of the best independent contractors in the Washington metro area. Moving forward, our hiring goals include growth by bringing aboard the necessary staff to support our various contracts. All total, LMI expects to increase its staff by 25 percent in the coming year.

What are the advantages of your Fairfax County location?
Being in Fairfax County has been advantageous for several key reasons. Foremost, it gives us access to our government clients, who are able to visit our headquarters, while allowing us proximity to go off site to do business with them on their home turf. Fairfax County (and Tysons Corner in particular) is also an accessible central location that helps us attract the best workforce, drawing from candidates throughout the national capital area.

Where do you see your business in five to 10 years?
LMI is in the midst of an aggressive plan to double our business with federal clients over the next five years, with special focus on healthcare, environment and energy, intelligence and infrastructure management.

Where is your company located?
LMI headquarters is located in McLean at 2000 Corporate Ridge (near Tysons Corner off the Beltway).
