E-Bird

Good morning from e-country. This is the Friday, May 9, 2008, edition of the Fairfax County E-Bird with business and economic development news about Fairfax County, Virginia USA.

Now hear this: At 8 a.m. on May 14, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority will host "2008 Virginia Legislative Session Update," a discussion organized by the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC). The event, at FCEDA's headquarters in Tysons Corner (8300 Boone Boulevard, Suite 450, Vienna, VA http://www.fairfaxcountyeda.org/directions.htm) features Josh Levi, VP for Policy at NVTC. The event is free, but you must RSVP to Mary Ellen Knuti at meknuti@speakerboxpr.com or 703-969-8791.

Breakfast with Tiffanny: Tiffanny Gates is president and owner of Herndon-based Emerging Technologies Group USA, a company that counts the Departments of Defense, State, and Justice, as well as the intelligence community, among its clients. Gates shares tips for retaining top talent, and weighs in on data security in the latest issue of Executive Biz, the snazzy online newsletter of Tysons Corner-based Potomac Officers Club.

Our numbers are up. . . and down: The metro area is "doing better than the rest of the country" in terms of job growth, said John McClain, senior fellow and deputy director of Fairfax-based George Mason University's Center for Regional Analysis. For the 12-month period ending in March, the region gained 22,500 jobs, compared with an 81,000-job loss nationwide. Other reports show that nationally, retail sales were up 3.6 percent in April for same-store sales, and weekly jobless claims dropped by 18,000 last week, both surpassing expectations. The Washington Examiner's Whitney Blake crunched the numbers.  And, according to the county's department of budget and management, Our Fair Parish still has significantly lower unemployment rates than Virginia or the country as a whole. This brief was recorded in the Connection Newspapers.

Secure transaction: Reston-based Maximus, Inc., closed a deal to sell its Security Solutions division to Cogent, Inc. (which maintains its east-coast headquarters in Fair Reston) for $5 million. The Washington Business Journal's Darlene Darcy gave this story maximum attention.

Banking on it: Chantilly-based electronic financial services provider Online Resources Corporation announced that National Penn Bancshares and Travis Credit Union have signed new multi-year agreements for retail Internet banking and other services. This news was deposited on the Web site of the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa.

Spot on: In a recent interview, Bob Dinkel, President and Chief Operating Officer at Herndon-based federal IT provider FedResults, discussed selling to the federal government. Dinkel played a key role in the merger of JB Cubed and Government Strategy Advisors to form FedResults in July 2007. Listen to the full WDMV AM 700  interview on "The Leaders Spot," now online.

Totally tubular: YouTube isn't just for teens anymore. Two dozen Virginia government bodies are now "YouTubing" it, including Fairfax County  and the state government. Richmond Times-Dispatch scribe Jim Nolan went channel surfing online and produced this story.
