Fairfax County: Creating a Modern Economy DVD

Creating a Modern Economy DVDOver the course of 50 years, Fairfax County transformed itself from a leading dairy center into a bedroom community for Washington, D.C., and then into one of the world’s most prominent business and technology centers. This transformation was the result of vision, careful planning and hard work of many people who saw the potential for Fairfax County to become an economic powerhouse.

In October 2003 eight community leaders were asked to talk about the county’s transformation and how it happened. They relate the important factors behind how the public and private sectors worked together to make Fairfax County the economic engine of the Washington area and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The eight community leaders featured on the DVD are:

  • John T. “Til” Hazel, real estate developer and attorney
  • George W. Johnson, president, George Mason University, 1978-1996
  • Robert Kahn, president, CNRI and “Father of the Internet”
  • J. Hamilton Lambert, Fairfax County Executive, 1980-1990
  • Robert E. Simon, founder and planner of Reston
  • Mayo S. Stuntz, historian
  • James Wilding, president and CEO, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority 1987-2003
  • Earle Williams, Fairfax County business and community leader
