Fairfax County is the home of the Internet. ArpaNet, the original Internet project, was started by military and government agencies in Washington, D.C., in the 1960s. Many Internet-related firms were developed by those who worked on the ArpaNet project and its descendants. Several "pioneers" of the Internet were founded in Fairfax County, including America Online, Network Solutions and UUNET. Prominent Internet companies in Fairfax County are CareerBuilder.com, Road Runner Group and VeriSign, to name a few.
