Fairfax County is home to more than 8,900 technology firms, ranging from high-profile, publicly held companies to entrepreneurial start-ups. Knowledge-based enterprises directly employ more than 146,000 people in Fairfax County. Some of the world's leading technology firms are headquartered here and scores of companies from other technology regions are reaching into Fairfax County to compete and thrive in the dynamic marketplace.
Technology has been the driving force behind Fairfax County's economic expansion for the past two decades. Advanced industries such as cybersecurity, big data and analytics, cloud computing and digital media technologies are attracted to Fairfax County today in part because of the large numbers of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workers in the region. Fairfax County has one of the largest concentrations of technology jobs in the country. Professional, scientific and technical services account for 28 percent of employment in the county (four times the national average).
Other industries, including many with corporate headquarters, rely on Fairfax County’s large pool of executive, management and financial workers. And it is a young workforce. One in three of the county’s professional and technical jobs are held by young adults ages 19 to 34.
Fairfax County has strong clusters in the defense and aerospace, engineering services, federal government contracting, life sciences, financial and telecommunications sectors. All thrive thanks to easy access to business, consumer and federal customer markets. Other industries well-represented within Fairfax County include financial services and telecommunications.
Fortune 500 firms headquartered in the county include Freddie Mac, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, Capital One, CSC, Hilton Worldwide, Booz Allen Hamilton and NVR. Other leading employers include Inova Health Systems, Mars Inc., Gannett/TEGNA, Volkswagen of America, CACI International and SAIC.
