Fairfax County EDA accepts 2010 Southern Economic Development Council award for business attraction success

Fairfax County, Virginia USA, Monday, August 16, 2010 -

The Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC, www.sedc.org) announced that Fairfax County won a 2010 Community Economic Development Award in recognition of its success in business attraction. SEDC announced the 2010 awards today at its annual conference being held in New Orleans.

Fairfax County represented Virginia in the SEDC award category for communities with more than 100,000 residents. In March, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) accepted a 2010 Community Economic Development Award from the Virginia Economic Development Association for Fairfax County’s success in attracting business, and the state-level award winners moved up to the regional competition.

The FCEDA promotes Fairfax County as one of the world’s best business locations. In the last three years Northrop Grumman, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), Hilton Worldwide, CSC and Volkswagen Group of America have announced they would relocate their corporate headquarters to Fairfax County, and Google based its federal sales division in Fairfax County.

“For 30 years the Economic Development Authority has executed a comprehensive and aggressive business attraction program to make Fairfax County one of the best places in the world to build a company, and our success has helped to build the great quality of life we enjoy here,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA. “Recognition of that success by economic development organizations around the Southeast is very gratifying.”

The FCEDA’s success in business attraction has transformed Fairfax County into what the U.S. Department of Labor called “the [Washington] metropolitan area’s private-sector job leader.”

Time magazine called Fairfax County, “one of the great economic success stories of our time.” Business growth helps Fairfax County fund the nation’s top-rated school system and other public services that contribute to the quality of life of residents. Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, access to global markets through Washington Dulles International Airport and a well-educated workforce.

The award-winning Fairfax County Economic Development Authority promotes Fairfax County as one of the world’s best business centers. The FCEDA offers site location and business development assistance, and connections with county and state government agencies, to help companies locate and expand in Fairfax County. In addition to its headquarters in Tysons Corner, Fairfax County’s largest business district, the FCEDA maintains marketing offices in six important global business centers: Bangalore, London, Los Angeles, Munich, Seoul and Tel Aviv.
