Cloud technology and a ‘showpiece’ HQ: Q&A with SpinSys product manager Lou Ferrucci

Founded in 1998, SpinSys provides cloud-based products and consulting services. Based in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County, SpinSys’ “showpiece” headquarters in Fairview Park boasts an open floor plan with amenities that include shared workspaces, a fully stocked restaurant, a game room and gym.

Lou Ferrucci, product manager at SpinSys, talked to the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority about the company’s technology, office culture, job openings, the company’s partnership with four historically black universities, and why Fairfax County is the best place for its headquarters.

FCEDA: What is the main business focus of your Fairfax County office?

Ferrucci: SpinSys is headquartered here in Fairfax County with reach into 27 different states. Our roots are in Northern Virginia, including Arlington, before moving our headquarters to Falls Church in 2016. Having attracted some of the marquee Fortune 500 companies, Fairfax County is business centric, enabling business to survive and thrive in support of government and private sector customers.

FCEDA: What makes Fairfax County a great location for your company?

Ferrucci: Fairfax County is business friendly and supportive of initiation, growth, and continued success. It’s a great location because of ready access to a highly trained workforce, many of them with clearances to work with the federal government. In addition, there is easy access to D.C. and a high quality of residential and work-life for our employees. Fairfax County also provides access to a choice of Class A office facilities and high-rises for a showpiece office for the headquarters.

FCEDA: Tell us about SpinSys’ Partnership Commitment.

Ferrucci: SpinSys is committed to building an inclusive work environment by attracting, developing, and retaining candidates from diverse populations. SpinSys is assisting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through technology transfer, cooperative education programs, and other collaborative initiatives. These initiatives help us in meeting our DOD goals and allow our computer engineers and data scientists to advance new technology. We selected four outstanding HBCUs to partner with in cultivating students for careers in the IT/Health Technology industry: North Carolina A&T, Florida A&M, Norfolk State and Hampton University. Strengthening the infrastructure of participating institutions, our partnership provides opportunities for increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in their pursuit of degrees and careers in computer science, engineering, and supporting areas.

FCEDA: Please describe your company’s use of innovative technology.

Ferrucci: SpinSys embraces innovative technologies to introduce disruptive solutions for our customers. We are a cloud-agnostic solution provider with solutions for AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, for instance. Applying our tagline “It’s About Time,” we leverage innovative technologies to create more time for our customers to do what they enjoy by automating and streamlining solutions.

FCEDA: What differentiates your company from others in terms of technology?

Ferrucci: SpinSys offers the Multiplatform Data Acquisition, Collection, and Analytics (MDACA) suite of applications. This robust big data solution supports data acquisition, storage and access for on-premises and cloud-hosted environments. For one of our customers, MDACA currently ingests 7.5 billion transactions daily, processing 5 million per minute or 87,000 every second. MDACA is designed to support any cloud environment, increase return on investment, reduce time to market and slash costs.

FCEDA: Who are your primary customers?

Ferrucci: SpinSys has historically supported federal and private-sector customers with our products and services. Our primary customers have included the Surgeon General of the United States Air Force, the Defense Health Agency, and the Naval Information Warfare Center-Atlantic.

FCEDA: Tell us about the paper airplane in the company logo.

Ferrucci: It’s representative of both innovative thought and uplifting solutions. We wanted an easy-to-understand icon that represented ideas and ideation. It represents what engineers do with their plans in work as they iterate through them.
