What does your company/organization do?

ICF is a global consulting services provider with more than 5,000 professionals focused on making big things possible for our commercial and government clients. Our commercial markets include aviation, cybersecurity, digital and marketing, energy and health where we provide services such as program management, research and evaluation, information management and data analytics. For our government clients in climate, education, environment, energy and health to mention a few, we provide business profess operations and optimization, policy and regulatory development, training and technical assistance for example.

When was it established? 

It was founded in 1969, and our first president was former Tuskegee Airman C.D. Lester. He was joined in the firm by three U.S. Department of Defense analysts.

What is the origin of your company name?

ICF started as the Inner City Fund and was a venture capital firm with a mission to finance inner-city businesses in the Washington, D.C., area. Our consulting business proved more successful than our investments, and four decades later, ICF is a global, diversified firm helping clients worldwide solve their biggest challenges and achieve their most formidable goals. Today, it’s simply known as ICF.

Who owns your company?

The company recently celebrated 10 years of being publicly traded on NASDAQ. It was listed under the symbol ICFI in 2006.

What is the main business focus of your Fairfax County office?

Our Fairfax location is the headquarters and our largest office out of the 55 offices worldwide. It is the focus of our corporate operations and serves as the center of our deep expertise of our markets, services and more than 5,000 researchers, policy specialists, social scientists, digital strategists and creatives.

When did you open your Fairfax County office? 

The Fairfax office opened in 1987 and it has been our headquarters ever since.

Who are your primary customers?  

Our clients are leaders in markets ranging from health to energy to transportation, as well as government agencies in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Has that customer base changed, or do you anticipate a change?

Since 1969, we are proud to work with both government and commercial clients.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

We focus on making big things possible. Clients work with ICF on issues that matter profoundly to their success, whether it’s a product or program that matters to the business or a social issue or policy that matters to the world. We apply highly focused, highly specialized expertise to solve the world’s most complex challenges, like disaster recovery, environmental resilience and health policy. As a global leader, it makes sense for us to be in the D.C. metro community where we are close to leaders in business, government and policy. Our headquarters in Virginia has always been well supported by the state, local and business community.

What new products or services are you offering?

ICF serves clients in a range of markets, including climate, education, energy and cybersecurity. In addition, through key acquisitions over the past decade, ICF now offers a full suite of digital, communications, loyalty and marketing services to help clients engage more fully with citizens, consumers and clients. An example is our recent work with Virginia Tourism Corporation for which we designed and developed a web-based, mobile solution, featuring the state’s scenic byways to enhance the tourism experience.
