Now hear this: CNBC’s proclamation yesterday that Virginia is the best place for America to do business is in large part a reflection of Northern Virginia’s ability to attract companies such as Amazon and the 25,000 jobs that its HQ2 project will bring. Virginia ranked first in CNBC’s categories of workforce and education, two areas of extreme importance to Amazon. Incoming FCEDA president and CEO Victor Hoskins was instrumental in bringing HQ2 to Northern Virginia and his thoughts about Virginia’s No.1 ranking were picked up by multiple media outlets including Virginia Business and FairfaxNews.

Added intelligence: Reston-based SOS International acquired Vykin Corporation, which specializes in communications, intelligence and IT support to the Department of Defense and intelligence community. Vykin, headquartered in Tampa, Fla., also has offices in Reston. According to William McCormick of ExecutiveBiz, SOSi’s fourth acquisition in the past four years expands the company’s footprint into the Pacific, Southwest Asia and Europe and strengthens its IT and intelligence capabilities, particularly in cloud development supporting command and control and intelligence systems.

Where the jobs are: The Washington Business Journal’s latest list of the largest area employers (based on the number of Washington area employees) include No.2 Fairfax County Public Schools (with 24,137), No.5 Inova Health System(18,000) and No.10 General Dynamics (13,750). Also in the top 25 are: No.11 Deloitte, No.12 Booz Allen Hamilton; No.13 Fairfax County government, No.20 Hilton, No.21 Leidos and No.23 Capital One.

Big Blue adds Red: IBM closed its acquisition of Red Hat for approximately $34 billion. Both international firms have operations in Fairfax County. According to Jane Edwards of GovConWire, the transaction, originally announced last October, enables both companies to offer an open source technology-based hybrid multicloud platform to help enterprises deploy and manage applications and data on public and private clouds as well as on-site.

For your information: General Dynamics Information Technology, based in the Falls Church area, won a potential five-year, $2 billion contract to continue managing the U.S. Department of State global technical security supply chain. Michelai Graham of Technical.ly/DC reports that GDIT will provide a fully-integrated, solution consisting of technical security systems, engineering and solution development, hybrid supply chain and distribution management, as well as a global logistics and transportation network.

Easee, leasee contracts: LeaseAccelerator, a Reston-based developer of enterprise lease accounting software, acquired Australia-based Guardian Global Systems, a provider of real estate administration software. The acquisition will enable LeaseAccelerator to offer a tool to help real estate leaders manage building, land and property contracts. Potomac Tech Wire carried the release.

Fruits of their labor: Virginia Living Magazine named the Reston Farmers Market the best farmers’ market in Northern Virginia. The market, conceived in 1997, will be open at Lake Anne Plaza on Saturdays through December 7.

In the community: Cvent, the Tysons-based events and hospitality technology provider, launched a customizable online space known as Cvent Community for professionals to connect with and learn from each professionals. Notable contract wins by firms in Fairfax County

  • Lockheed Martin received a $174.9 million order to help the Navy update long range anti-ship missile systems thorugh engineering, testing, product and ancillary support services. GovConWire
  • General Dynamics won a one-year, $296.1 million contract to supply the  Army with ground-based tactical systems to support signals intelligence and electronic warfare missions. GovConWire
  • Leidos will perform work in Reston on a potential five-year, $66.7 million contract to develop and demonstrate new sensor concepts and systems for the Air Force. ExecutiveBiz
  • Northrop Grumman will design, develop and test two broadband satellites intended for communications across the north polar region for Space Norway, a government-owned Norwegian space firm. ExecutiveBiz
  • Carahsoft won a potential five-year, $69.1 million purchase agreement to work with multiple resell partners in distributing Symantec products to the Navy. ExecutiveBiz
  • Tetra Tech booked a $72.5 million contract to help the Environmental Protection Agency respond to hazardous substance releases and oil spills. ExecutiveBiz
  • BAE Systems received a potential $4.7 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to incorporate machine learning into systems used to decipher radio frequency signals. ExecutiveBiz
  • Jacobs Engineering picked up a potential five-year, $25 million contract to provide commissioning services to the State Department Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations. ExecutiveBiz
  • SpaceX received a NASA contract to assist in launching an observatory designed to help scientists discover astronomical details in space. GovConWire
