In 2017, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) worked with 164 companies and organizations that announced the addition of 8,200 jobs to the Fairfax County economy.

Information technology led the way in 2017 job creation, and IT companies announced expansions across the county. The largest single announcement came from Amazon Web Services, which is bringing 1,500 jobs to its east coast campus in Herndon. Other IT firms enjoyed major expansions in 2017, including Favor TechConsulting, bringing 800 jobs to Tysons Corner, IOMAXIS adding 555 jobs in Springfield, CACI International bringing more than 400 jobs to Fairfax, and TEK Systems adding 373 jobs in Merrifield.

“The consistent expansion of jobs that we have seen in the information technology arena is a testament to the number of highly skilled tech professionals in the job force and to Fairfax County’s continuing ability to attract the best and brightest in fields that require specific skills and demand continuing innovation,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA. “It’s also a testament to Fairfax County having the kind of assets such as innovative employers having quality-of-life assets such as great schools and cultural and recreation opportunities that attract IT workers and their families.”

Job expansion happened in other industry sectors too. The Boat Owners Association of the U.S., which announced 375 new jobs coming to Springfield, and Aerotek, a global staffing agency with 200 jobs being added in Fairfax, were among those making significant job announcements.

Of the 164 firms that worked with the FCEDA and announced new jobs, 128 are American companies, including 15 that are minority-, woman- or veteran-owned. Thirty-six of the companies announcing job creation are foreign-owned firms.
