Fairfax County EDA works with 23 companies adding more than 900 jobs to local economy

Fairfax County, Virginia — In the second quarter of 2018, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority(FCEDA) worked with 23 companies and organizations that announced the addition of 943 jobs to the Fairfax County economy.

Two prominent announcements during the quarter came from Appian, a Reston-based information technology company that is expanding and relocating to Tysons Corner, and the College Board, a Reston-based membership organization that develops educational testing and represents more than 6,000 colleges and schools.

Appian announced it will retain 600 jobs and add 600 more as it shifts headquarters within the county. The College Board announced it is retaining 614 jobs and expanding with 120 new ones in Reston.

“Fairfax County is a world-class location for a software company,” said Appian CEO Matt Calkins, whose company has committed $28.4 million to its Fairfax County expansion. “We know we picked a good place. There are terrific employees around here who are intelligent, motivated, dynamic, creative and innovative. This is a great place to build an innovative business.”

While Appian is a homegrown success story, not every company adding employees has roots in Fairfax County. BitDam Ltd., an Israel-based cybersecurity company, established its presence in Reston this spring.

“Our leadership decided that the U.S. is the best choice to begin executing our expansion plans,” said Liron Barak, CEO of BitDam, which develops threat protection solutions for in-bound files and web links. “The FCEDA team made a great case for Fairfax County; the deep pool of high-quality cyber talent, strong technical infrastructure and robust transportation options make it an ideal starting point for our U.S expansion while easily reaching back to our Tel Aviv headquarters. Fairfax County provides the technical and transportation infrastructure and the thriving business environment that BitDam needs to make its international expansion more efficient.”

“We welcome companies of all sizes from around the globe,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. “We’re very pleased when companies like Appian elect to remain in the county and expand and when companies like BitDam recognize the benefits that Fairfax County can offer a company that’s new to the U.S.

“The consistent expansion of jobs that we have seen in the information technology arena is a testament to the number of highly skilled tech professionals in the job force and to Fairfax County’s continuing ability to attract the best and brightest in fields that require specific skills and demand continuing innovation.”

Time magazine called Fairfax County “one of the great economic success stories of our time.” Business growth and innovation helps Fairfax County fund the nation’s top-rated school system and other public services that contribute to the quality of life of residents. Fairfax County offers businesses a state-of-the- art telecommunications infrastructure, access to global markets through Washington Dulles International Airport, a vibrant investment capital community and a highly skilled, well-educated workforce.

The award-winning Fairfax County Economic Development Authority promotes Fairfax County as a business and technology center.
