International connections: Tysons-based GTT Communications is buying European telecommunications and IT company KPN International for $56 million. According to Drew Hansen of the Washington Business Journal, GTT will add more than 400 strategic enterprise and carrier clients and long-haul fiber routes through London, Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt.

Identifying the need: USA Today’s Dawn Gilbertson produced a story about ways Reston-based IDEMIA is helping travelers enroll in TSA PreCheck by offering signups at non-traditional locations such as music festivals and sporting events. The company’s IdentoGO RV is scheduled to hit music events in Louisville, Chattanooga, Atlanta and New Orleans this month. The TSA charges $85 for five years of pre-check expedited screening privileges.

Credit report: Northern Virginia credit unions Northwest Federal of Herndon and Constellation Federal, with operations in Reston and Herndon, completed their merger. The combined entity, which will be called Northwest Federal, is now a top 60 credit union nationally by assets, writes the Washington Business Journal’sLaura Spitalniak.

Herndon update: Michael Neibauer of the Washington Business Journal offers an update on the redevelopment of historic downtown Herndon that is expected to begin before the end of the year. Reston-based Comstock is working to acquire the nearly 5-acre, town-owned site and has begun the search for contractors to create elements of the estimated $85 million development. The project is set to include 273 apartments, 17,000 square feet of retail, an 18,000-square-foot arts center, public plazas and a parking garage.

Robotic assistance: According to Stephanie Kanowtiz’s story for GCN.com, KPMG developed a robotic process automation tool that has begun helping the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services to verify medical records for insurance claims. CMS began using the Intake Process Automation Tool, which ingests codes, digitizes and extracts information from documents, in April.

Glad to partner: Gladstone Investment Corp., headquartered in Tysons, partnered with Slate Capital Group to acquire Allentown, Pa.-based Horizon Facilities Services, LLC, a provider of outsourced services to the rental car industry under the Managed Labor Solutions brand. According to a release picked up by citybizlist , Horizon also provides commercial janitorial services under the name Professional Maintenance Co.
