FCEDA to host Talent Workshop, demo website to help Northern Virginia employers attract talent

On September 15 the FCEDA will present a virtual workshop to unveil new national research about talent, discuss resources available to employers that want help in attracting talent — and showcase a new website that will help regional employers market to and attract top talent from across the nation to come to Northern Virginia.

The “Talent Attraction Workshop: Marketing Northern Virginia” webinar, which begins at 11 a.m. on September 15, will be especially helpful for employers’ human resource executives and anyone who has an interest or stake in workforce recruitment. The one-hour webinar aims to arm employers with the research and resources they need to market Northern Virginia to talent located outside the region. The workshop will also reveal top findings from talent perception research commissioned by the FCEDA, as well as findings from a national survey of more than 1,600 people recently conducted by Development Counsellors International (DCI), a leading place-marketing firm. Attendees will leave the webinar with an understanding of what talent wants, what they think of Northern Virginia, and new resources they can use to market the region when recruiting.

The workshop will also include a demo of the newly launched www.workinnorthernvirginia.com, a digital hub for talent to learn about career opportunities and relocation information. The website already has garnered thousands of sessions from New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other locations. The hub includes an active job board with more than 90,000 active listings in Northern Virginia, up-skilling and training resources, a cost-of-living calculator, a community-finder quiz and a map of companies in the region.

“We hope the research and resources revealed in the talent workshop empower our employers to recruit and retain the best talent in Northern Virginia,” said Victor Hoskins, president and CEO of the FCEDA. “Not to mention, the digital tool will serve as a resource for those who want to work for top companies in Northern Virginia, who need help finding a job due to layoffs or furloughs amid the pandemic, or who simply want to relocate here. We want to help talent find the brighter future they deserve—and show them that their future could be in Northern Virginia.”

The new website is part of a talent initiative funded last year by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The original idea of the initiative was to spur interest in Fairfax County and Northern Virginia as a great place to live and work, especially for workers in other parts of the nation. With the economic downturn created by the coronavirus pandemic, the initiative has been broadened to help workers who have been laid off or furloughed since March.

“Especially now, with so many more people out of work because of the pandemic, I am excited to see the Economic Development Authority helping businesses with resources to market Fairfax County and Northern Virginia as a great place to live and land a job through this workshop and the talent website,” said Jeffrey C. McKay, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. “This is another way to build the resiliency of our area economy.”
